The way to pay for the smell

A very poor Chinese man operated a small laundry next door to a more prosperous Chinese restaurant. Every day he would take his simple bowl of rice, place his chair as near as he dared to the restaurant, and sniff the appetizing aromas as he ate.

One day, he received a bill from his neighbor "for smell of food." He went into his laundry and came out with his tiny money box. This he rattled in the ears of his creditor, saying "I hereby pay for the smell of your food with the sound of my money."

우리 살람 빚지곤 못 산다 해

찢어지게 가난한 한 중국인이 장사가 훨씬 잘 되는 한 식당 옆에서 조그만 세탁소를 하고 있었다. 그는 매일 맨밥 한 그릇을 들고 최대한 그 중국 식당 가까이 의자를 대 놓고는 맛있는 음식 냄새를 맡으며 식사를 했다.

그러던 어느 날, 그는 이웃집에서 보낸 ‘음식 냄새 맡은데’에 대한 청구서를 받았다. 그는 자기 세탁소 안으로 들어가 조그만 돈 상자를 들고 나왔다. 그리고는 그것을 자기 빚쟁이 귀에다 쩔렁쩔렁 흔들며 말했다. “자, 돈 소리를 들려 줬으니 음식 냄새 맡은 값은 지불한 겁니다.”
