Behind the Eight-Ball(6)

There is still another expression in English that means you are in trouble. You are in a "fine kettle of fish." Now, this expression was first used 200 years ago by British writers. One story says that it comes from an early British custom of cooking fish in huge pots of kettles. The cooked fish were served at parties along the river. As the story goes, a cook did something wrong, producing a kettle of fish that no one could eat. That cook was surely in trouble for his "fine kettle of fish."
We still use all these expressions today. In fact, I will be in a "fine kettle of fish," or "in a pretty pickle," and probably "behind the eight-ball" if I don't end this story now.

As the story goes 이야기가 전하는 바에 따르면. 여기서 go는‘통하다, 알려지다’의 뜻이며, 관용어구로 굳어진 표현이다. ex. The story goes that he was murdered. (이야기에 의하면 그는 살해되었다.)

producing 재분사로 분사구문. and produced로 바꿔 쓸 수 있다. 이런 분사구문의 쓰임새를 알면 영작에도 쉽게 응용할 수 있다.

영어에는 어려움에 처한 것을 나타내는 또 다른 표현이 있다.“fine kettle of fish”에 들어 있다가 그것이다. 이 표현은 200년전 영국 작가들에 의해 처음 사용되었다. 한 이야기에 따르면 이것은 큰 숱이나 냄비로 생선을 요리하던 옛 영국의 관습에서 유래되었다고 한다. 이렇게 요리된 생선은 강변 파티에 제공되었다 이 이야기에 따르면 한 요리사가 잘못해서 한 냄비의 생선을 아무도 먹을 수 없게 만들어버렸다. 그 요리사는‘훌륭한 한 냄비의 생선’을 놓고 분명히 곤경에 처했던 것이다.
오늘날도 우리는 이 모든 표현들을 쓴다. 사실, 이 이야기를 여기서 끝내지 않으면 나 자신도“fine kettle of fish”또는“in a pretty pickle”에, 그리고 아마도“behind the eight-ball”에 처하게 될 것이다.
