Behind the Eight-Ball(1)

Every people has its own way of saying things, its own special expressions. These expressions may be difficult for others to understand. But they are parts of the living speech of a nation. One such expression is "behind the eight-ball." When someone is "behind the eight-ball" he is in a difficult, if not impossible situation.

if not impossible 불가능하지는 않다 하더라도. if는 although의 뜻.
ex. Peter is a pleasant if noisy child. 피터는 시끄럽긴 하지만 재미있는 아이야.

각 민족은 사물을 설명하는 자기 나름대로의 방법, 그 자신만의 독특한 표현들을 가지고 있다. 이러한 표현들은 다른 사람들이 이해하기 힘들 수도 있다. 그러나 이러한 표현들은 한 나라의 살아있는 언어의 일부이다. 이러한 표현들 중의 하나가“behind the eight-ball”이다. 어떤 사람이‘eight-ball에 가려 있다’면 그는 불가능한 상황은 아닐지라도 어려운 상황에 처해있는 것이다.
