Baloney (4)

The Irish castle now is famous for its Blarney stone. Kissing the stone is thought to give a person special powers of speech. One who has kissed the Blarney stone, so the story goes, can speak words of praise so smoothly and sweetly that you believe them, even when you know they are false.
A former Roman Catholic bishop of New York City, Fulton Sheen, once explained, "Baloney is praise so thick it can not be true, and blarney is praise so thin we like it."

thick뒤에 that이 생략됨. ‘너무나 두꺼워서[지나쳐서] 사실일 수가 없다.’

이 아일랜드의 성은 현재는 Blarney stone으로 유명하다 이 돌에 입을 맞추면 언변이 좋아진다고 전해진다. 얘기에 따르면, 이 둘에 입맞춘 사람은 너무나 부드럽고 달콤하게 아양을 떨기 때문에 사람들은 거짓인줄 알면서도 그 말을 믿게 된다는 것이다.
뉴욕 시의 로마가톨릭 주교였던 Fulton Sheen은 언젠가 이렇게 설명했다. “Baloney는 너무 지나친 찬사이기 때문에 진실일 수가 없으나, blarney는 너무 얄팍한 찬사이기 때문에 우리는 그것을 좋아하게 된다.”고.
