Baloney (3)

The expression has been used for years. Fifty years ago, a former Governer of New York State, Alfred Smith, criticized some claims by President Franklin Roosevelt about the successes of the Roosevelt administration. Smith said, "No matter how thin you slice it, it is still baloney."
A similar word has almost the same meaning as baloney. It even sounds almost the same. The word is blarney. It began in Ireland about 1600. The lord of Blarney castle, near Cork, agreed to surrender the castle to British troops. But he kept making excuses for postponing the surrender. And he made them sound like very good excuses. Finally Queen Elizabeth said, of the latest of his excuses, "This is just more of the same blarney."

no matter how... 아무리 ～하더라도(=however).

이 표현은 여러 해 동안 사용되었다. 50년 전에, 뉴욕 주지사를 지냈던 알프레드 스미스는 프랭클린 루즈벨트 대통령이 자기 행정부의 공적은 내세우자 이에 대해 비판을 가했다. 스미스는 말했다.“아무리 얇게 썰어도 그건 여전히 발로니 소시지이다.”
발로니와 거의 같은 뜻을 가진 유사한 말이 있다. 발음도 거의 비슷하게 들린다. Blarney라는 말이 그것이다. 이 말은 1600년경 아일랜드에서 시작되었다. 코크 가까이에 있는 Blarney성의 성주는 이 성을 영국군에 넘겨주기로 약속하였다. 그러나 그는 이 핑계 저 핑계를 대면서 양도를 지연시켰다. 그런데 그 핑계들이 아주 그럴싸하게 들렸다. 마침내 엘리자베스 여왕이 그의 마지막 변명에 대해 입을 열었다.“이번에는 아첨이 좀더 많이 들었군.”
